Dr. Vijay Viswanathan, is the Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Education, Research and Training in Diabetes. He has over 100 original publications in Diabetic Nephropathy and Diabetic Foot and presented several papers on these subjects in various National and International Meetings and also organized National and International Workshops in this field. He was one of the persons responsible for establishing the Diabetic Foot Society of India of which he is the Joint Secretary. He has written up the Kidney Section of the Global Diabetes Guidelines of International Diabetes Federation. He is the Secretary of Association of Physicians of India – Tamil Nadu State Chapter.

From the API, he has received the Boehringer Knoll Junior Lectureship in Diabetes in 1995, Dr. J. N. Berry Award for other specialities in 1997, Hoechst Senior Lectureship in Diabetes in 2005, Dr. B. R. Sengupta Oration Gold Medal in 2006 from API(West Bengal). His father Prof. M. Viswanathan holds the record for organising the maximum number of APICON’s in Chennai in 1961 – 1962, 1972 – 1973 and in 1978 – 1979.
